How To Use A Peak Flow Meter

  • Sit up straight or preferably stand up straight.  All tests should be performed in the same position.

  • Set the tab on the calibrated scale to zero on the bottom of the meter scale.

  • Take in a deep breath.

  • Place the mouthpiece in the mouth with lips closed tightly around it.

  • Place hands around the mouthpiece, being careful not to cover the back of the peak flow meter or tab.

  • Blow as hard and quick as possible.

  • The tab will move up the scale and the number at which it stops is your reading.

  • Repeat steps 1 through 6 two more times and record the highest number of your three blows as your score in the daily record chart.

Establish Your Baseline

  • To establish your baseline you will need to measure and record your peak flow morning and night for two weeks.  This should be done at a time when your asthma is under good control.

  • The highest number recorded will become your baseline.  It is possible that your baseline will change over time.

  • It is important to call or visit your doctor's office after your first few weeks of using your peak flow meter.  This will allow your physician to review your peak flow readings and develop an action plan using a zone system.  These zones are divided into three levels.

  • Green = 80-100% of personal best--All clear

  • Yellow = 50-80% of your personal best--caution

  • Red = 50% of personal best--medical alert

  • Action is necessary when there is a 15-20% decrease in peak flow measurement.

  • At this point . . .

    • Take your backup medicine.

    • Wait 15 to 20 minutes.

    • Repeat your peak flow.

    • Call your doctor if there is no improvement.

  • If you experience a 50% or greater drop in peak flow, with little or no improvement after medication, seek medical attention immediately.  Beware of the late phase response.  You might experience another drop in your peak flow within the next 4 to 6 hours.

Care of Your Peak Flow Meter

  • Clean your peak flow meter at least once per week by rinsing with warm water and mild soap.

  • Shake off excess water and let air dry on a lint free towel.

  • Never boil or heat your peak flow meter. Most peak flow meters are not dishwasher safe.

Availability

There are several types of peak flow meters available. They can be purchased from physician's offices, pharmacies and medical supply companies. Most types are available in high and low ranges.

Reliability

Studies have shown peak flow meters to be quite reliable. It is recommended to use the same peak flow brand because various peak flow meters can result in different readings
